What is jujutsu?

Jujutsu is a Japanese martial art developed by the Samurai warriors for unarmed combat. It is a highly efficient and effective system of close combat that uses empty hands or a short weapon to defeat one or more opponents.

Dating back centuries, jujutsu has had a profound influence on the development of martial arts in Japan and beyond. It shares many similarities with Aiki Ju Jutsu, and has served as a foundation for “younger” martial arts like Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At its core, jujutsu emphasizes practical techniques and strategic thinking over brute force. Students learn to leverage their opponents’ strength and momentum against them, using joint locks, throws, and other techniques to gain the upper hand in combat.

Whether you’re a seasoned martial artist or just starting out, jujutsu offers a rich and rewarding path of study. Join us at Satorikan Ju Jutsu Dojo to experience the power and precision of this ancient Japanese martial art.

Our sensei

Meet Greg Regan sensei – a 5th dan jujutsu teacher with over 40 years of experience in martial arts. Throughout his career, Greg has remained dedicated to studying and teaching jujutsu, constantly refining his knowledge and skills.

Greg began his jujutsu training in West Chiltington, West Sussex in 1975. In 1979, he moved to Plymouth and began training under Peter Farrar sensei (1960 – 1998), and later under Farrar sensei’s teacher, Brian Graham shihan (-2005), for 17 years.

In 1998, Greg met Billy Doak shihan (-2009) and began making regular trips to Wales to train under him. Over the next 10 years, Greg was awarded his 3rd and 4th dans by Doak shihan. In 2013, he received his 5th dan from Mo Piero Rovigatti, with whom he has maintained a strong relationship since they were introduced in 2002.

In addition to jujutsu, Greg holds an honorary 1st dan in aikido, which was awarded to him by Gwynne Jones shihan.

Through his many years of training and teaching, Greg has come to believe that the study of jujutsu is a lifelong journey.

Join us at Satorikan Ju Jutsu Dojo to learn from one of the most experienced and dedicated jujutsu teachers in the field.
